Buck, 6 weeks old

I went looking for more information and found this support group — loved the name and signed up!

We met Bucky for the first time last night and fell in love! His paw was injured in the first days of his life and wasn’t treated properly. He had infection and gangrene, was turned into a local shelter, and rescued by fosters who are friends with our son. Our son kept encouraging us to meet Buck, and finally sent me a picture. We have been wanting to rescue another dog, but weren’t sure what sort of care Buck would require. Once we met him and talked with the foster mom, we decided to adopt him. He got along perfectly with our 1-year-old, Molly.

Buck’s paw fell off a short time ago, and he is scheduled for surgery this Tuesday (6/25/13) to amputate the entire back leg because of the gangrene. I don’t fully understand all of this, but I am comfortable with the idea that, because he is so young, he will learn to cope from the start. We will be able to take Bucky into our home after he has recovered from his surgery.

We are VERY excited to welcome him into our home and look forward to many years and many adventures together!

  1. He is too adorable for words. Welcome to our site and bless you for giving this baby a wonderful home. How lucky is he!!!???

He will probably barely realize something is different since he has had to live without the paw already. This is his normal from the beginning!!

Can’t wait to see more pics. It’s what we live for around here!!

  2. That indeed is one luck py puppy…finally!
Yes, being g a puppy he should have very little trouble adapting. Recovery from surgery will still be hard on him and I’omm sure the shelter people will be there to comfort him and hold him

Can’t wait to see photos of your little pup!

Search the site and you’ll find all sorts of links on how to raise a tripawd and now to prepare for his omecomng. Keeping him fro. over doing it after he feels better will be a challenge probably. There are all sorts of strength building g exercises you can do too to keep his other legs strong. He has a long life ahead of him and. needs to stay strong, especially as he ages.

Look forward to your next post WITH pictures”

The bond you will develop will be so heartwarming.

    Best of luck to you!

  4. Welcome to the Tripawds group. And thank you for being an angel to Bucky & rescuing him.
You are joining a wonderful group of people, pups, & kitties.

You are right when you say he will adjust great. It will be like he never had that 4th leg to him. 🙂
Younger dogs always adjust just fine.

  5. Welcome, and we are so glad you found us! Here you will find encouragement, comfort, knowledge and more. There are forums for specific questions, and people and their dogs and cats that have been through it all.

Bless your heart for rescuing a sweet little soul. Wishing the best for his surgery and a speedy and uneventful recovery. And you’re right… once he’s a tripawd he’ll be happily hopping on 3 legs for life!

Please post more photos when you have a chance… we’d love to watch him grow up on these pages.

  6. AAWWWW He is adorable!!! He is lucky to have such a loving home and was meant to be with your family. Our Leo who is a 10 year old Yellow Lab had his front right leg amputated on May 31, 2013 due to bone cancer and is adjusting well. It is an adjustment for the whole family but wouldn’t have it any other way. You will find this website very helpful and supportive like we do. Good Luck and Buck and your family are in our prayers!!!!

  7. What a great story!! Buck sure is a cutie! Can’t wait to hear about his adventures with his new family. Be sure to post plenty of photos and videos!!!

good luck.. and don’t be afraid to ask questions here… although we are not vets, we can help you with different ideas, etc.
And don’t be afraid to ask your vet either!!!

    good luck!!

  9. Buck is one very lucky boy to meet such pawesome people like you. What a wonderful life he is going to have with your pack, congratulations!

We’re so glad you joined us here. Whatever we can do to help make your journey easier just let us know. Something tells me that this little pup won’t need much help at all though.

  10. Hey Buck! I’m sorry you met up with some mean people at first but wow it’s cool you found good ones. My first people were dumasses too and I lost my rear leg ’cause they tied me up and forgot about me. But now life is GOOD and I get around and go crazy just like any other young German Shepherd. I know you will do just fine too.

Thanks for coming to Tripawds, we’re hoppy you did!
